Island Vibes at YCS!
The YCS auditorium was filled with Caribbean Island vibes from our fifth-grade steelpan drum concert.
York Central School AlumnusTed Canning returned to his alma mater to instruct fifth-grade students on the unique sound of the steelpan drum.
Mr. Canning worked with the students for just five days, teaching them about the history of drums and how to play the steelpans. Remarkably, the students learned the instrument very well and performed two wonderful concerts - one in the afternoon for the elementary school and one in the evening for their families and the community.
This marked the sixteenth year that Mr. Canning has returned to York Elementary School to share his love and knowledge of steelpan drums with our students. We appreciate Mr. Canning’s dedication to YES.
Steelpan music originated in Trinidad and Tobago and has spread to other Caribbean countries. The unique sound of the steelpan originates from 55-gallon steel drums.

Mr. Keenan's eighth-grade Technology students studied engines and how they fuel rockets. Students designed and built their rockets in anticipation of launch day. On a crisp, sunny morning, the students launched their rockets into air!

Congratulations to Junior Tessa Rodwell who set a new YCS Triple Jump record at the State Qualifier meet on Saturday, June 7, 2025.
Tessa jumped 34' 11.75", breaking the 2016 record jump of 34' 10"!

First graders had a view into the prehistoric world of reptiles through a visit from Seth Poyfair from Prehistoric World, Reptile Zoo, located in Perry, NY.
The students learned about the different reptiles that Mr. Poyfair brought with him and were surprised to learn some of the interesting facts about their habitats.

The audience in the Ivan F. Hilfiker Auditorium was treated to a fabulous Elementary School Spring Band & Chorus concert on June 5. The Fourth and Fifth Grade Bands were really impressive with their progress since the winter concert. They performed everything from the classic, "When the Saints Go Marching In, performed by the Fourth Graders, to the very cool "Beginners Rock" performed by the Fifth Graders.
The Elementary Chorus was also fantastic! They performed beautiful selections such as "Memories" and "Rainbow." They also got the audience toe-tapping with "Mary Had A Little Blues!"
Congratulations to the musicians and vocalists, and their teachers Ms. Kathleen Dessert and Mrs. Susan Daeffler.

Sundae Honors for Middle Schoolers!
The end-of-the-year celebrations are sweet, especially for Middle School students who achieved High Honor Roll for all three quarters of the 2024-2025 school year.
Twenty-two middle school students achieved this success and enjoyed an ice cream sundae along with their teachers, School Counselor Mrs. Gilman, and Superintendent Furletti.

Tomorrow, June 4, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., York AP Art students and Pavilion Art Students are hosting an exhibit of their creative works at the Yard of Ale.

On May 28, 2025, York Central School proudly inducted 18 new members to the National Honor Society.
Congratulations to Ryan Apps, John Ayers, Claire Coffey, Elizabeth Donnelly, Michael Dunn, Madison Ezard, Sophia Herbek, Sylvia Llop, Ava Lorenzetti, Ethan Metz, Grace Northrop, Bailey Orman, Eaton Reissig, Chloe Rowe, Henry Scott, Olivia Simmons, Cara Sunday, and Chloe Sunday.
NHS President Ava Beardsley welcomed the guests to the evening ceremony and explained the selection criteria for NHS membership. Students are selected for NHS based on achievement in four areas: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Current members Felicity Grant, Ava Beardsley, Rylee Cuozzo, and Haley Diamond, spoke on each of those criteria.
Retiring Elementary School Teachers Sandy Streb, Gretchen Crane, and Lisa Lippold addressed the audience with an encouraging message of pride in the inductees’ high school achievements and best wishes for their futures.
Interim Middle-High School Principal Mr. Ken Ellison and Superintendent Mr. David Furletti presented the certificates to the inductees and welcomed them to the National Honor Society membership.
We are deeply proud of the newest NHS members and proud of their achievements.

With just about 12 school days remaining in their Senior year at YCS, the Class of 2025 enjoyed some time together camping out overnight at school.
Sunrises over the valley are the best! So is the aroma of breakfast being cooked on the griddle.
A little inside fun happened overnight, too.
Seniors rule right now in Knight's Country!
Fifth-grade students have been learning about economics and entrepreneurship. The unit challenged the students to create a startup business and develop products to sell. The students created a wide variety of handmade products. They also created marketing materials such as product posters and advertisements.
Each business received startup money. Their strategy was to develop and sell products that would break even or produce a profit. The students quickly learned that they had to spend money in order to make money (they had to purchase materials and rent items to get their businesses off the ground).
The project culminated with a flea market that spanned three classrooms and featured each of the companies created by the students, and their products. Shoppers each received spending money to purchase the items of their choice.
The market was bustling with eager shoppers who filled their shopping bags with great products.
Thank you to the fifth-grade teachers for challenging the students with this great project, the students for working very hard on it, and for all of the staff who shopped at the flea market and made the students feel pride in their efforts.
