The power, or lack of, words.
Have you ever considered the fine art of effective communication? With the widespread use of social media, some say it is becoming a lost art.
Mrs. Boyd's STEAM Exploration class considered effective communication - their assignment was to write a communication to teach someone how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Mrs. Boyd read the instructions created by the student as another student in the class agreed to follow the directions exactly as they were written. This resulted in some perfect PB&J sandwiches.
But what happens when certain critical steps are left out, such as, insert the knife into the peanut butter jar. Put enough of it on the knife, then use the knife to spread the peanut butter over one slice of bread. Some students were not quite as specific in their writing, which resulted in some humorous "sandwiches."
The importance of effective communication, whether in life or in a career, was clearly demonstrated by this lesson.

Meet Mackenzie Routly - First grade teacher.
Welcome to the Golden Knights Family!
"I chose to pursue childhood education because in high school, I fell in love with working with kids while volunteering in a pre-k classroom. I love being able to bring a smile to kids' faces and help them grow as learners and as humans. I decided YCS would be a good fit for me since I went here myself and feel comfortable with everyone. I knew I would get the support I need as a first-year teacher.

York drivers getting right to the bus safety drills!
Today, our Transportation drivers conducted bus safety drills with our elementary school students. We appreciate our drivers' dedication to student safety.

Mr. Chatley's History of Sport students got the year off to a flying start by participating in a Native American hoop & pole game.
The goal of the game is simple: To have fun; to understand some of the earliest forms of Native American games and hunting training; and to stop your target from further progress. The Hoop & Pole game has many different backgrounds, but was primarily used by Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Chippewa tribes across the Midwest to hone their hunting and accuracy skills.
In today's modified setting, students took turns throwing a sharpened stick at a hula-hoop hoping to stop its progress at a distance of 5-10 yards. In actuality, students would use a real hunting spear and a hoop with makeshift netting to simulate puncturing or striking an animal.
The students finished their game by having a throwing contest, where the furthest toss carried a distance of 23 yards down the football field! Their Principal Mrs. Peet and teacher Mr. Chatley couldn't resist the challenge and also tried their throwing skills.
